A little man is a term given to a person of small stature, usually referring to someone of five feet or under. The term can be used in many different ways and often on the basis of their personality traits. Although it is often used as an insult, it can also be used out of humor. It is typically not intended to be offensive unless the speaker knows that the listener doesn't like being called "little. The phrase, "you're just a little man" is said to somebody who's being small-minded or petty. This suggests that this person is acting like they are very important but are actually small in stature or significance. The phrase can also be used to say that somebody is being childish or immature about something, almost as if the person is behaving like a child. Little man syndrome (LMS), also called Napoleon complex, is a phrase describing individuals who are assertive or aggressive in an attempt to compensate for feelings of inadequacy resulting from their short size. Little man syndrome can be an affliction of people who are of short stature, or appear to be of short stature. For example, it is not uncommon for some NBA players to shrink two or three inches once they retire. One belief is that little man syndrome was named after several famous historical figures who were not notably small in stature but who people perceived as having a Napoleon complex due to their behavior and self-confidence. These include Napoleon Bonaparte (who stood at only 5'7") and Genghis Khan (who stood at around 5'6"). Little man syndrome affects the self-esteem of people who are short by suggesting that they are unable to dominate or control others. This may be explained by the observation that the small stature of historical figures is commonly the result of a genetic condition, dwarfism. It has been suggested, however, that some individuals cope with their lack of physical stature by becoming assertive and aggressive in an attempt to compensate for feelings of inadequacy resulting from their short size. Napoleon also had this syndrome. He was not known to be short in stature, yet he still had the Napoleon complex, which was caused by his short height for his era. Little Man Syndrome is being diagnosed more often, especially among teenagers. "Little Man." Online Etymology Dictionary.
